Straight into the Scene
“Are
you gay?”
I’ve started to tire
of this question lately. It well and truly does my head in! Why is my sexuality
an issue? Why are you so curious? Does it change me as a person purely because
of my sexuality?
Those are a few questions I ask myself. I must get asked about my
sexuality…Ooh… At least 6 times a week. And I’ve worked on the scene for almost
4 years.
Being of the heterosexual persuasion does NOT change me as a person. If
anything, it makes me more aware of the things that happen in or around the
scene.
I’ve seen, heard and witnessed a lot while working on the scene. A hell of a lot more than your bog standard hetty. I was once praised on being “tolerant”. I mean, WHAT THE HELL!? Tolerant!? Of what!? Working with people and for people and their safety!? Yeah… Very tolerant.
As you’re guessing, I hate the narrow minded
few that wander the streets. In this day and age there shouldn’t be any
homophobic activity. I really don’t understand that. Not one wee bit. That is
one thing I’ve never understood. Why can’t one person love another, regardless
of their sex? At the end of the day, love is what put you here. I’ve found some
really amazing quotes from people while scrolling through the oh-so-infinite
internet. I’ll give you a few…
What is straight? A line can be straight, or a street, but the human
heart, oh, no, it's curved like a road through mountains. ~ Tennessee
Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire,
1947
Labels? Okay, fine. I'm bisensual. Heteroflexible. And
life-curious. That about covers it. ~ Morgan Torva
If Michelangelo had been straight, the Sistine Chapel would have been
wallpapered. ~ Robin Tyler
Who would give a law to lovers? Love is unto itself a higher law. ~
Boethius, The Consolation of Philosophy,
A.D. 524
My favourite, by a massive amount, is the bottom one. And on that note I think
I’ll finish and allow you to reflect.
Alex Waterson
