Steam - Eyres Avenue, Armley, Leeds LS12 3BA
The new kid on the sauna-scene block. A huge complex set a couple of miles west of the city centre in an area called Armley, although still easily reached by public transport. Open 7 days a week from 10am til 3am (which we always thought was a little early so they're obviously not going for the "after-clubbing" crowd). You can tell a lot of money has been spent here and their facilities include a spa, steam room, 25 man sauna, sunbeds, private cabins, a range of playrooms, fully licenced bar, events area and cinemas. Phew! They have lots of different theme nights running, so it's probably best you check their website before visiting. Membership required - check the website for details. web - www.steamcomplex.com phone - 0113 279 8885 Basement - 7 Heaton's Court, Leeds LS1 4LJ Situated right next to Leeds superclub Mission, in a railway arch close to the main train station. The location and the fact that Basement is open 24/7 mean it's nearly always busy (or least it was when we've been). They occasionally team up with Homo @ Mission to offer one big cruising night. They offer dry and wet saunas, private cabins, cinema and everything you would come to expect. Never been to a gay sauna before? Why not try their Meet & Greet service where they'll meet you outside then show you around and answer any questions you have. Nice touch. If you'd rather not use the front entrance (it is next to the busiest nightclub in Leeds after all) then you can use the more private entrance round the back. Membership required - check the website for details. web - www.basementcomplex.co.uk phone - 0113 242 7730 Plastic Ivy - 33 Leeds Road, Dewsbury Not actually situated in Leeds, but a few miles south of the city in a town called Dewsbury, but we've heard so many good things about this small sauna we thought we'd add it. More of a daytime sauna as it's only open from noon til 11pm 6 days a week (closed Tuesdays). Facilities include a 6 man spa, 8 man sauna, steam room, rest rooms and cruising area, tv lounge and darkroom. Membership required - check the website for details. Not sure if the name really is tacky or if they're being ironic though! The photos on their website from their opening night in 1999 with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a hoot. web - www.plasticivy.co.uk phone - 01924 455 600 |
