Martin Loves... Leeds Pride
It's official, Leeds' gay Christmas is upon us. Pride 2011 looks set to be as fabulous as ever, with an amazing two stages and loads of brilliant acts.
I'm personally looking forward to seeing my hairy gaymothers Bears Aloud, who have found themselves on some sort of epic record breaking Pride tour across the country. I don't know how they keep going every single weekend. (Maybe it's the rider...) They've told me they're doing something new for Leeds, so I'm so excited to see them perform, as ever. They never disappoint so definitely one not to miss.
I'm also looking forward to seeing Drag Idol 2010 winner Cherry Pops perform on the main stage. I had the best time performing last year and Cherry is doing so well after her win - it's going to be exciting to see what she comes up with next.
And of course I'm looking forward to all the other performers on the day, particularly the Viaduct Showbar, Cheryl Hole and the lovely Marlena and Kira (who STILL need to do a duet cover of The Boy Is Mine. Just a suggestion.) The boyf is also dragging up this year for his performance with the bar staff at The Viaduct - it's strange seeing him all tranny-ed up, and I'm slightly jealous that he seems to do his make-up better than me! I know I'll be proud seeing him on the main stage again.
Whilst I can't say I know too much about the headliners / non-local acts (perhaps I live under a Leeds shaped rock), I'm sure they'll be great. I've had a quick Google of Eli Prime, and they look like the most eye candy for the day, boys.
I’m sure this year will be especially poignant for many members of the Leeds gay community after the loss of Darrell, and I know they’ll be many moments on the day to celebrate his life, and remember everything he did for Leeds LGBT Pride.
Maria Millionaire (my better half) won't be performing this year at Leeds Pride. I've taken a little step back to focus on my 'boy career' and to try and improve the act. I've still dabbled a little, filming a really cool music video for a local indie band with renowned director Paul Morricone, along with Gisele Batrice, Pixie Monrue and Belle Rouge. We shot half of it in Mission and half in a studio, and what we've seen looks amazing. I can't wait to see it.
I'll be performing and DJ-ing at the next Sapphic Traffic party, which is holding an alternative Pride party the night before Leeds Pride, on Saturday the 6th. Sapphic Traffic have really taken me in over the years and I'm so happy to be performing there again. Also on the line up is an all-girl Rage Against The Machine cover band - amazing. I can't wait to see the contrast between the two of us. I'll be unveiling a semi-new look and a brand new set that I've put together especially for the evening.
I think it's cool to see other, non-mainstream Pride events starting to pop up over the weekend. As Tom Doyle said in his Leeds Guide piece, I too would love to see Leeds Pride to "develop into a festival, possibly over a weekend, which has a range of different focuses ". It'd be ace to see this become reality, so I think it's important to help it grow. You can find out more about Sapphic Traffic's Harvey Milk party here.
With that said, I hope you all have a lovely time - stay safe, don't do drugs and make sure you clap along when Parade do the live-instrumental-break-down bit of their top-ten HIT Louder. You'll find me near the front screaming 'Ginger!!!' at Bears Aloud, with a mojito. Can. not. wait.
