Martin Loves... Drag Idol 2011
Five reasons why you should be at Drag Idol tomorrow:
1) Erm, hello? It’s Drag Idol - the biggest thing since sliced Pride. Everyone goes to Drag Idol and it’s one of the biggest and best events of the year. This year seems like it’s going to be even bigger than ever, although I don’t know how it can – last year was humongous, with as much camp as Maria Carey shitting glitter.
2) It’s hilarious. Last year I must have cried laughing about six times. The whit of the judges mixed with some of the poor contestant’s ill advised routines / costumes / make up makes for a very funny show. The past years have seen comedy numbers win so be sure to keep your eyes on the funny girls.
3) MICHELLE COLLINS.
4) The special guests. Besides the amazing guest judge and the lovely line up of other judges including my faves Danny Cher Bailey and Carla Jackson, there’s also always some great performances on the night. This year promises to be no different – with everyone’s favourite Chelsea and last year’s fierce diva Raven and her ‘Hous of Mandela’. (I’m pretty sure it’s meant to be ‘Haus’ but I’m just going with what’s on the website). There’s also a Cher tribute act which looks scarily realistic, and last year’s winner Cherry doing a number too. It’s going to be a late one!
5) It’s for an amazing cause. If you’ve ever been to Mesmac’s office, or used any of their services, you’ll see why no matter what people have to say about the event, no-one can deny the inordinate amount of good it does for Leeds’ gay community and those in need. Times aren’t just tough, they are well and truly shite so let’s get drunk and buy more votes than we can afford, and raise loads of money.
Good luck to all the contestants – and don’t worry if you fall over! I fell off a table and still managed to take home the crown so relax and enjoy yourself!
