Martin Loves... change
Ok, that’s a lie. I hate change as much as a nervous Sugababes member who’s just served her first 18 months in the band. After graduating in the recession and being in and out of work for two years after that, all I wanted was a bit of stability. Taking this year to really focus on getting myself sorted career wise, I’ve been fortunate in having a job working with some ace people. I grew comfortable in an industry that wasn’t for me, and I knew change had to come.
I’m now just started a really, really great job, doing loads of creative digital stuff and I’m starting to recognise that change is good. So much so that I’ve cut all my hair off - after five years of a huge emo fringe, you can now see my entire face, and wonky eyes - hurrah! It’s all been very crazy over the past few weeks, so apologies for my absence.
November is a great month for exciting happenings in Leeds - so if you fancy a change of scene, why not check out these amazing upcoming events?
Leeds Digital Festival
Leeds Digital Festival is happening now! It’s only on for a couple of weeks so if you like the sound of things, get in quick! There’s loads of cool events around some great venues throughout the city. Unfortunately for me many of them happen during work hours (boo), but my highlights include How To Create Great Video Content (ideal for you wannabe vloggers!), a discussion on what’s next for Facebook, by the Yorkshire Evening Post, and a talk which I’m looking forward to, by tech journalist Ben Hammersley.
Leeds International Film Festival
Also happening now! If you’ve been past the town hall recently, you’ll have seen the MASSIVE advert for LIFF that stretches across the front of it. Pick up a programme and discover the hundreds of films that are being shown until November 20th. There’s a fantastic mix of films to choose from (and there’s some ace reviews over on TQS Magazine), including a massive horror selection. I’m looking forward to seeing some Japanese robot action and some European slow-burning drama. How continental!
The Wet Spot Leeds
Burlesque at it’s best in Leeds, at only £10 a ticket at The Wardrobe. Lots of beautiful ladies doing some amazing routines. If you’re a fan of cabaret and you’ve not been to The Wet Spot yet - you’re missing out! Get down early to bag a seat as this event is popular. Last time I went I saw a woman in a giant fish bowl, a King Kong strip tease, a silhouetted woman dancing in a huge crystal ball and a lady stripping whilst on fire. Dangerously sexy!
Drag Idol Leeds
The biggest thing since sliced Pride, Drag Idol is the event of the winter. Mega popular on the scene, and a Gay Leeds favourite, be sure to get a ticked ASAP, before they sell out. Amateur drag competition come Las Vegas show stopper, Drag Idol is glamorous and hilarious. I’ll probably write a full post on Drag Idol soon so keep your eyes peeled for that and get your ticket now!
