Manila Luzon-Rupaul's Drag Race
Our very own Cheryl Hole has interviewed the very lovely Manila Luzon from ‘Rupauls Drag Race’ but beware, the interviews does contain a few season 3 spoilers!!
Enjoy the interview…
Hi Manila,
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this interview, I’m
Cheryl Hole a drag queen from Leeds in the UK, I’ve been lucky enough to see
season 3 of drag race and I just had to get a hold of this season’s most fierce
queen. So…
Why did you apply to be on Rupauls drag race?
My boyfriend/girlfriend Sahara Davenport was on
the previous season and when she didn't win, I thought I would go and pick up
where she left off!
Was it nerve racking meeting the supermodel of the
world "Rupaul" for the first time?
It was kind of a dream come true. I remember as a
child my family was in New York City and we decided to eat at Model Cafe, the
"Planet Hollywood" owned by models and I remember sitting under a
giant shadow box with RuPaul's dress from the cover of "Supermodel"
and I was SO happy! Ru is everything I expected and more!
Who out of the other queens on season 3 would you
say was/is your main competition?
I thought that Delta Work was going to be fierce!
I knew immediately that my direct competition was Raja, because we had so many
similarities; both half Asians with a fierce fashion sense who have a slight
"club kid" aesthetic.
You are one of the most creative queen's on this
seasons drag race What/who inspires you.
I like to find inspiration in everyday things. I
like my drag to have themes that are easily recognizable. I want people to see
me and instantly say "Manila is a pineapple!"
What was it like lip-syncing for your life?
It’s kind of crazy. It's one of my high points and
low points in the competition. Your focus narrows and all there is a stage, a
song, you and RuPaul! I didn't even see Delta on the stage with me. At the very
end of the song, I turned and bumped into Delta because I didn't know she was
standing there, and when it happened I fell into her embrace and I just started
bawling.
Who went too soon? & why?
I think Venus went home too soon. She's an amazing
Madonna impersonator and I would have loved to see what she would have done in the
Snatch Game! Phoenix was a great personality, she only had the chance to show
that she's one fierce BITCH, but she's a lot more than a bitch! And Delta could
have made it to the end and snatched that crown, honey!
How as life changed since you were part of the
show?
It's amazing how much love and support I have
received from strangers! It's also crazy to me how much I've affected them.
I've gotten many letters from fans saying that I've inspired them or even
helped some out of depressions and someone even credited me for stopping
themselves from suicidal thoughts! I am blessed!
Any regrets about entering?
Nope! I try not to have any regrets. It's all part
of life!
We have an annual drag competition here called
Drag Idol, What advice would you give the budding drag queen thinking of
entering?
Be creative always! And I don't mean just go the
Gaga way... I try to challenge myself at every step to better my drag. I want
each time I get in drag to be better than the last. Learn the craft of drag,
but it's truly an art, so become an artist.
