Soho Sadness
Last week I was in the BBC Radio Leeds studio talking on ‘Liz Green Live’ about the issue of the two men being asked to leave a Soho bar for kissing each other.
Obviously, I feel incredibly strongly that gay couples should have the right to express their love or affection for each other safely and without fear of abuse and not have to hide away in the relative safety of a gay bar to do it.
But, I was shocked at the bile that came from some of the people that rang into to the show to express their views on homosexuality. One man on the show was from the Christian Alliance he spoke about how we all make him want to vomit and how disgusting we all are.
Now, I do have some issues as to how some people interpret religion but my understanding is that the basic principal behind all religion is love and acceptance. So, how can this man, who pretends to be a Christian, claim that people loving each other is vile and makes him want to vomit?
Before going on the show I did have some idea of what I would be facing but this individual really shocked me. Surely this level of hatred should not be given the identity of Christianity. I know that he does not speak for or represent all Christians but he was there as a representative of the Christian Alliance and therefore, spoke for that group.
I do not really know what happened in that bar in Soho and probably never will but I find it incredibly sad that bigoted people who are full of hate and anger have, yet again, used this as an opportunity to bring their ugly views out of the closet.
