Limetree 2010
Normally preferring the (minimum) 4 star security of room service and air-conditioning, it had to be something special to convince me to camp.
But, the offering of O’Hooley & Tidow, Madam Laycock, Pink Triangle Theatre and a Bet Lynch themed Queerinspace tent, The Limetree Festival appeared to be very special.
So, with it being just a 45 minute drive from Leeds, my wifey and I decided to risk it. We packed everyone into the car and set off. After returning home several times for forgotten bedding, tents and children, we were finally on our way to Limetree.
The first thing that struck us all about Limetree was the complete lack of attitude and prejudice. Women with women, men with women and men with men were walking around hand-in-hand without being given a second glance. Also, the amazing line-up had people of every sexuality and genre performing.
Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow’s performance began to a sparsely attended crowd but, as the air filled with the powerful poignancy of their voices, people were drawn over in their droves to get closer to the supremacy of which the O’Hooley & Tidow combination brings. Their 45 minute performance on the main stage was humorous, moving and incredible.

Another great and refreshing act was the alternative, Madam Laycock. Performing in the marvellously kitsch, queerinspace tent, this Leeds band of five women offered a mixture of Burlesque and Cabaret and an exciting and hugely entertaining performance that left the crowd literally demanding more. How anyone can write a song about waxing moustaches and leave the audience thrilled is beyond me but Madam Laycock and her Dabeno Pleasures did just that.

One of the most thought provoking and moving shows was from Pink Triangle Theatre. Formed earlier this year, this team of four men (two couples) provided a shocking, tear-jerking and deeply powerful performance that explored homophobia and showed how deeply ingrained it is in our society. The pace of the 30 minute show was breathtaking and ended with the names of people murdered, in recent times, due to their sexuality being written onto to pink triangles. Sadly, many, many names were heard.
These are just three of the acts that made up The Limetree Festival. The prices were incredibly reasonable, the atmosphere electric and the environment attitude free. It is well worth a visit next year.
