Why Leeds?

As someone who has been going out on the Leeds scene for over half my life (scary) it has been incredible to watch it grow and develop into what is fast becoming a scene to rival any in the country and indeed the world.

I recently had the pleasure of showing an American journalist around Leeds and showed him all of the bars and discussed what everyone did. He was deeply impressed by the people who work so hard on the scene, the bar staff, the dancers, entertainers and door-staff. He was amazed by the dedication shown by these people who spend their lives ensuring that there is something for everyone out there. He was also over-whelmed by the friendliness of everyone, not just to him but to each other. To see our scene through someone else’s eyes was an incredible experience.

The sheer number of talented performers from around the world who are contacting us and asking to come to Leeds to perform is immense and everyone has said that they want to be a part of, what they consider to be, the fastest growing scene in the country. The vibrancy and energy that Leeds has is being felt across the country and word is spreading throughout the world that Leeds is the place to be.

In the run up to Pride, the fundraising efforts and events by the bars has been fantastic and yes, of course the bars will make money on the day, but the work put in by these venues to make Pride what it is has been nothing short of amazing. Businesses need to make money to survive and continue providing the service that we demand but we only need to look at all of those people who have gone above and beyond expectations to realise why we have something very special happening here in Leeds.

Pride this year, for me, is about being proud of my sexuality but it is also about being proud of my city and our very own ‘gay quarter’ and also the tireless and dedicated people who make it what it is.
