I am so very annoyed! I settled down tonight to
watch a bit of harmless television this evening, but instead of being slightly
amused and entertained, I've been left wanting to scream at channel four.
Although I don't watch many programmes on a regular basis, I have been an avid
watcher of 'Shameless' since it started. It is supposed to be a light-hearted
comedy/drama, but tonight it was anything but! From the first episode, it has
been the talk of my neighbourhood because of the similarities to real life.
Tonight, the main storyline was based on the gay character and his cat. There
were so many instances of misinformation about HIV and AIDS. They also thought
it would be a good idea for someone who was HIV+ to commit suicide. The on-going
saga about the main gay character coming out to his mother further angered me.
Many of the people who watch this programme are young people and a good many of
them will be questioning their sexuality. Some of them will be living on
estates very similar to the one in 'Shameless'. Tonight's episode will not have
helped these people one bit! If they are going to have gay characters in their
programme, the least they can do is get their facts right. They were so off the
mark that it would have been laughable, if the issues were not so serious.
For a start, not everyone living on a council estate is bigoted. Also, they
KNOW that people cannot catch AIDS from cats, snot or tears. Some of us even
know that it is possible to be gay and proud AND have all the love and support
we could ever want from our family, friends and neighbours.
