Aunty Tracey
I'm 46 today
and still feel 17, even if my body feels 97 at times! Looking back on my life,
I've got to say that I've not had a bad time of it all. I may not be the
richest person in the world, or the best looking, but I really do have a lot to
be thankful for.
Raising three boys as a single parent has not been
the easiest thing to do, but I'm so very proud of my young men. Each of them
has turned out to be loving, sensitive and non-judgemental. Considering they
were brought up in Seacroft, a rough council estate, I count myself lucky that
they are all working and have lovely partners. I'll feel even luckier when the
two youngest finally move out!
Even though I have had what you could call a
disadvantaged background, I somehow managed to get to university and get a
degree. I think that going to university as a mature adult made me appreciate
the experience more than if I had gone at 18. It was difficult at times,
juggling a small family, work and education, but it also enriched me.
Life has changed so much in the last few years.
When I had my family, being 'out' wasn't an option. People with children had to
be seen as being heterosexual or their children were taken into care for their
parent's immorality. How things have changed. Now people who are against homosexuality
cannot adopt or foster children. What a wonderful time for gay and lesbian
people to have a family. What a wonderful time for my grandson to have a
lesbian nana!
I am a mature, confident woman who is embracing
middle age with all the enthusiasm of a teenager. Never was the best looking,
so not I'm going to stress about a few more laughter lines or another bit of
cellulite. My boys are grown up and leading their own lives, and still love
mummy millions.
Happy 46th birthday to me!!
Aunty Tracey.
