Aunty Tracey
I try not to
voice my political opinions in my blogs, but this time I think it's time I did!
At the Owlies, one very important person was
missing, the gorgeous Mr Tom Doyle, head of Mesmac. Whilst chatting to him a
few days ago, I learnt that he had been at a meeting in London to fight to keep
the funding for his sterling work in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Thankfully
he was successful.
Today I have just read an article by Johann Hari
in 'The Independent' about the Government's plans to outlaw the feeding of
homeless people. Cameron, in all his wisdom, has come up with the idea that
feeding homeless people only encourages people to be homeless. There was I,
thinking that the main causes of homelessness are a result of the lack of
support networks for people with mental health issues, people who are suffering
from addiction, a shortage of affordable and social housing, unemployment and
young people who have grown up in the care system with no real family support
or experience of independent living.
I find it hard to comprehend what is going on in
the corridors of power. I really hope that this country of ours is not being
run by people who are evil and selfish. I hope that they are just naive and
totally out of touch with reality. Maybe then, we can hope they will soon see
sense. I cannot help thinking though, that Cameron and his cronies are hoping
that all the people who don't fit the Conservative model of heterosexual,
middle class England will just vanish from our green and pleasant land.
We already know from the last Conservative
Government that if you don't fit in with the 'family values' model of
Conservative England, they would rather you kept quiet and out of the way. This
was the reason many people of my generation stayed 'in the closet' in order to
have a family and raise children. Fortunately, the Government now realises the
value of the 'pink pound' and the 'pink vote'. For this reason, our views are
now seen as valid. And thanks to people like Tom Doyle, essential services are
keeping their funding. The homeless have no voice. They have no money and no
address, therefore no vote. This means they do not have any say in the
treatment of homelessness.
I hope that there are some of you who will join me
in speaking up for these forgotten human beings.
These people won't just vanish from your neglect
overnight, Mr Cameron, people take a long time to die!!
