Leeds Malmaison
The Leeds Malmaison Hotel is situated in the heart of the gay scene. With views of The Bridge and Lower Briggate from some of the room, you couldn’t get much closer for a night out or weekend away.
Like all Malmaison hotels, the Leeds Mal building had a former use, and has been loving restored, with each room created around the existing space, reflecting the building’s history. The Leeds Mal is a former bus depot, and you are reminded of this throughout, particularly by the black and white photographs that adorn the rooms, and the hotels suite, named ‘The Depot’.
After spending the night there, GayLeeds.com can comment as follows:
Check in was ultra simple - we were greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. We were asked if we knew the area and if we wanted any suggestions for things to do during our stay.
The reception was a sight to behold, with beautiful pillars, luxurious seating areas and distinctly French décor.
Our room was on the second (of four) floor, tucked around the corner of the hotel, away from the road. It housed a King Sized bed, six magnificent windows stretching up the high ceiling, a massive wardrobe and an impeccable black and white themed bathroom.
We were particularly impressed with the amount of detail in the room - ours came with a complimentary copy of Harpers Bazaar, two incredibly comfortable dressing gowns and a set of toiletries that encouraged us to take them home.
A quick trip down the French speaking life brought us to the Brasserie for dinner. We were greeted and offered a choice of seat. The brasserie is cleverly tucked away in the corner of the hotel, and didn’t feel like a hotel restaurant at all. With a real blazing fire, and more French décor including beautiful wooden panelling and furniture, we sat down to a cosy meal.
The menu was relatively simply, but varied enough to allow for lots of choice. We were impressed by the use of locally sourced ingredients in many dishes. The waiters were helpful and knowledgeable when suggesting what dishes and wines went well together. We were also encourage to indulge in the gorgeous chocolate dessert, and were glad we did. The service and food were definitely the highlight of our visit.
After a comfortable night’s sleep and a refreshing power shower the next morning, we attended breakfast. Again, there was ample choice but we both opted for the breakfast buffet, which included a wide array of fresh fruit and pastries.
Throughout our stay we were treated excellently, and just the same as heterosexual guests. On no occasion did we feel uncomfortable. In fact, we often felt much the opposite - welcomed, and treated, like old friends. Whether for business, a romantic treat, Pride or pleasure, the Leeds Mal comes highly recommended.
